Having spent several years working at Château Pétrus, Alvaro Palacios established his own winery in the less well-known Catalonian region of Priorat in 1989 with the sole aim of producing world-class wines from exceptionally old, low-yielding vines. In a short space of time he has gained a reputation as one of Spain’s most significant winemakers and his wines are comfortably some of the best in the region. 2015 is the inaugural release of Aubaguetes, a Grenache-dominant blend from a single ancient vineyard in the village of Bellmunt. This is a rugged, powerful and distinctly mineral wine, with almost ethereal notes of wild red fruits, Mediterranean herbs and slate. An exceptional release with excellent cellaring potential of which only 1,780 bottles were produced.
