First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For John. from E.W. Aug. 10 1922". John Hugh Smith was a wealthy English banker, friends with Edith Wharton from 1908. "John Hugh Smith's youthful crush on her graduated into a steady, undemanding, lifelong friendship. In later life, he became the most reactionary and old-fashioned member of her regular circle" (Hermione Lee). With corrections to the text in Wharton's hand on seven pages.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to front board and spine gilt.
Text a little toned, spine rolled and somewhat dull but an excellent copy.
