Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones into a wealthy New York family. She was known for her insights into the privileged lives of America's Gilded Age aristocracy. She became the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921 for 'The Age of Innocence'. Apart from writing, Wharton was also an authority on European literature and a designer of homes and gardens.
