Description

One of the most famous wines in the world, Château Mouton-Rothschild is located in Pauillac, around 30 miles north-west of Bordeaux itself. The château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. Alongside the quality of their wine, Mouton-Rothschild are also famous for their commissioning of world famous artists to create their labels with a new design featuring each year. The historic 1949 vintage was designed by Parisian painter André Dignimont (1891-1965).

About this wine

The 1949 Mouton Rothschild is a legendary vintage from the renowned Château Mouton Rothschild. 'Low Fill' indicates that the wine level in the bottle is lower than normal, often due to the natural evaporation through the cork over many years. Despite this, these bottles are highly sought after by collectors for their rarity and historical value. The 1949 Mouton Rothschild exhibits a deep ruby color, with aromas of black currants, violets, and hints of truffle. On the palate, it delivers a complex and rich tapestry of flavors including ripe dark fruits, cedar, and spices, with a remarkably long finish. Considered one of the finest vintages of the 20th century.

Mouton Rothschild

The Mouton Rothschild collection is celebrated for its exceptional vintages, with the 1945 vintage being particularly notable for its historical significance and exquisite quality. The distinct labels designed by famous artists for each vintage year make each bottle a piece of art.

Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most prestigious and renowned wine estates in Bordeaux, France. Located in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc region, Château Mouton Rothschild has a long and illustrious history dating back to the early 19th century. The estate's history can be traced back to the early 1800s when it was acquired by the Rothschild family, a prominent banking dynasty. Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased the estate in 1853. It was under the ownership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Nathaniel's great-grandson, that Château Mouton Rothschild rose to prominence in the 20th century. The estate encompasses around 90 hectares (222 acres) of vineyards, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot grapes. The vineyards are situated on well-drained gravelly soils, ideal for producing high-quality grapes. Château Mouton Rothschild produces several wines, with its Grand Vin being the most famous and sought-after. The Grand Vin of Château Mouton Rothschild is known for its richness, complexity, and aging potential. It is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon-based and is often considered among the finest wines in the world. Château Mouton Rothschild is renowned for its tradition of commissioning famous artists to design the labels for its Grand Vin. Since 1945, notable artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Warhol, and Jeff Koons have created labels for the estate's wines, adding a unique artistic dimension to the brand. Château Mouton Rothschild was elevated to the status of Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. This classification recognizes it as one of the top wine estates in Bordeaux, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, and Château Haut-Brion. Château Mouton Rothschild continues to be a symbol of excellence and innovation in the world of wine. Its wines are highly coveted by collectors and enthusiasts, and the estate remains at the forefront of Bordeaux winemaking, blending tradition with modern techniques to produce wines of exceptional quality.
