Description

This Port Ellen was distilled in 1982, matured for 40 years, and released in 2022 by independent bottler Hunter Laing & Co. as part of their Eidolon series, which celebrates the legacy of Scotland`s most revered distilleries. On the nose, aromas of peat, leather and dark fruit are followed by hints of vanilla and charred oak. The palate reveals black pepper, tobacco and dried fruit, balanced by a seductive smokiness and a sweet aftertaste.

About this whisky

This Port Ellen 40 Year Old from the Eidolon series by Hunter Laing represents an extraordinary slice of whisky history. Distilled in 1982, just a year before the distillery's closure, and aged for 40 years, this whisky offers an unparalleled glimpse into the legacy of Port Ellen. With profound depth, subtlety, and complexity, it features an exquisite balance of Islay's characteristic peat smoke, maritime influence, and aged refinement. Notes of peat smoke, maritime saltiness, orchard fruits, and aged oak intertwine gracefully, leading to a long, satisfyingly complex finish.

Eidolon Hunter Laing

The Eidolon series by Hunter Laing is a tribute to the legendary Port Ellen distillery, showcasing some of the last remaining stocks of whisky from this iconic Islay producer. Aged for 40 years, these releases embody the spirit and complexity of this lost distillery.

Port Ellen

Port Ellen was a distillery located on Islay, an island renowned for its peaty Scotch whiskies. The distillery was established in 1825 by Alexander Ker Mackay. Throughout its history, Port Ellen underwent various ownerships and periods of closures, being mothballed finally in 1983. Despite its closure, the whisky distilled at Port Ellen has become highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
