The Rolex Daytona has long been one of the most desirable chronographs in production, and these days, the most desirable Rolexes of any vintage. Funny, considering that the model was historically poor in sales prior to the end of the last century. Early Daytona’s can be a lot of fun to collect not just because of the recognition they have these days, but also, as with so many other Rolex models early in their life-cycles, because of how many changes and configurations they exhibited throughout the first decade or so of their production. One thing that they all had in common, however, was the manually-wound movements found within them. Every Daytona variant packed the iconic Valjoux 72 chronograph inside.
The watch that we have here, a Reference 6265, is known to collectors as a ‘Big Red’. Why that name? Well, the ‘Daytona’ text on the dial in rendered in red. And that's it. This piece dates to circa 1978 and has a strong, well preserved case with later pushers, a matte black dial with silver sub registers — or, a 'reverse-panda' dial, and it comes fitted to a later solid-link Oyster bracelet.
Condition:
Case: Untouched and strong showing normal wear throughout with no major damage or blemishes.
Dial: Excellent, with only faint discoloration in sub registers and minor blemish near 2:00 marker.
