An RQ series Resonance in platinum with a vivid salmon, pink gold dial. The RQ is the most radical rework of the Resonance since its introduction. The 378-component, pink gold calibre 1520 is now driven by a single mainspring barrel and incorporates dual one-second frequency remontoir d’egalités. Notably, its dial has been very slightly openworked to reveal the differential bridge ahead of the remontoir system and highlight this exceptional mechanical achievement. Due to this bridge and partially opened dial, the RQ is starting to earn the nickname ‘Eiffel Tower’. The RQ is a landmark work within what is undoubtedly FP Journe’s signature complication.
Worth Reading:
The Resonance is Journe’s quintessential complication, arguably his landmark work, and the greatest acoustic resonance wristwatch ever made. In the words of Rexhepi, ‘When I think of FP Journe, I think of the Resonance.’ Here in a very classic salmon dial and platinum case, this RQ series marks the 20th Anniversary of the model and represents the most radical reworking of Resonance since its introduction.
The RQ’s 378-component calibre 1520 varies from everything that came previously in dual remontoirs with a single mainspring barrel. Here, single mainspring power is split through a new differential mechanism to 2 remontoirs, each applying an unwavering torque to the dual resonating balances. Even with the complexity, the 1520 incorporates an almost perfect symmetry with purposeful deviations. Interestingly, the crowns have changed position commensurately (lower crown resets both seconds whilst re-syncing the balances).
These mechanical differences reflect in dial aesthetics; we now observe a small openworking centered around the new differential bridge. Due to this bridge, the RQ has earned the nickname ‘Eiffel Tower’. The RQ for the first time unites both clou de Paris dials in a sole artful, abstract shape. Reserve indication has been simplified and made symmetrical, which lets the upper dial real estate breathe. The impact of these changes is not slight, this dial shows offs FP’s ability to play with negative space, abstract form, mechanical hints, and exceptional handcraft. This example contrasts that daring harmony with a classic palette in salmon, made from pink gold.
Resonance is not just Journe at his best, though it is his signature. It is independent watchmaking at its best: inspired from Breguet pocket watches, then through painstaking generational evolution hewn into wristwatch format, far more mechanically complex and yet more precise. The RQ is a creative endeavor, overflowing with both genius mechanical solutions and artful, harmonious design. Foremost, it is a watch that offers a clear window into François-Paul’s mind and his singleness of vision. You feel the watchmaker’s identity, ambition, and soul every time you set it.
