This is a 1963 Gibson Barney Kessel Standard in excellent fully original condition. The original cherry sunburst finish shows some normal playing wear that's fairly light in nature, considering the 62-year age of the guitar. The 5-digit serial number is 61936, found on the back of the headstock and on the orange oval label inside the body, it corresponds to early 1963, so early in fact, that the bridge pickup sports an original nickel-plated PAF decal. The Patent-Applied-For decal on this bridge pickup is contrasted by the Patent Number Decal on the underside of the neck pickup, as also seen in the next to last close-up pictures. The original wiring harness shows unbroken solder joints, and those big 'cans' over the pots. In fact, the whole guitar has all original hardware, from the single-lined 'Deluxe' Kluson tuners to the 4-ply beveled pickguard, rosewood pedestal bridge, and Barney Kessel badge on the nickle plated trapeze tailpiece. This model has its original black-painted 'stinger' finished on the back of the headstock and the factory inscribed 'CUSTOM' on the truss-rod cover. The factory indicated that in early 1963, many of the Regular Barney Kessel Standards were fitted with the word 'CUSTOM' on the bell cover, even though they were not an actual Barney Kessel 'Custom'. The neck is straight, the string action is low, the fingerboard width is 1 11/16-inches at the stringnut, and the 1-piece mahogany neck's contour is a slim depth "C" shape. The scale length is 25 1/2 inches... very desirable for those full Jazz-tone phrasings. The spruce top is accented by the curly maple sides and back. This fine vintage archtop Gibson had some light fret divoting, which has been dressed out by a fine luthier. The original owner's widow has kept the guitar locked away for several decades, so you are buying a well-cared-for totally stock guitar. It's amazing that some rocker didn't get access to this and remove the untouched nickel PAF probably worth $4K itself, out of this guitar's body for a Les Paul project. Even the pickup cap's solder is untampered. This vintage Gibson comes in the original case that the music dealership provided to the original owner. Its dark gray exterior construction and dark blue felt-lined interior indicate a Gibson-built case for their early 1960's Epiphone semi-hollow-bodied models that were also produced by Gibson at that time. Probably a store employee unwittingly retrieved this case from the store's case rack for the new buyer at the time of original purchase. I'd like to know if any other Barney Kessel owners of guitars from this period also received this model case. That might indicate Barney Kessel's were shipped in these from the factory. We offer a 48-hour approval period with a full money-back guarantee, except for shipping charges, so buy with confidence.
