1993 Gibson Custom Shop L5 Master Model George Gobel
Here’s a bit of a rarity, a Custom Shop L5 Master Model “George Gobel.” While this is essentially an L5CT model, the actual labelling is as a Master Model George Gobel. It bears two labels, one with this model name, and another label signed by Mr. Hutchins, which also states “the top, back, tone-bars and air-chamber of this instrument were tested, tuned and the assembled instrument tried and approved.” This is a throwback to the days when Lloyd Loar himself signed these interior labels. Faithful to the original run with a 24 3/4” string length. There’s much conversation out there about these “Hutch” era guitars, and if signed examples are extra special. What I can say is that this particular one is a very nice instrument with well-selected and figured woods.Specs / Measurements1993 Custom ShopSpruce / Figured Maple~1.68” nut~24.75” string length~2.06" string spacing at saddle~17” lower boutOriginal Gibson branded hard case
Condition / Setup NotesThe guitar remains in excellent shape, more so considering its many years. There is tarnishing on the tailpiece, and some scuffs on the heel, but otherwise there is very spare surface wear, with only errant and minor marks. The string height is currently about 5/64”-3/64”, with light relief. Among other things, the short scale makes it appealing for fingerstyle playing as well. There is light fret wear, mostly under the b string, but there is no issue in playing.***A really nice custom shop creation, with the string length faithful to the original run along with the thinner body, making for a unique L5 playing experience. Red can be a tough color, but I really like how this one presents and there is some history behind this choice. As I understand it George Gobel was looking to stand out more on television broadcasts at the time, and wanted a crimson red guitar for this purpose. A beautiful L5 from the Hutchins era.
