An extremely uber rare: custom ordered, ‘Maccaferri - Grande Bouche’ electro/crossover style guitar, master crafted by the late David Hodson in the 1990’s. Its hand-crafted features include: a quality thick rigid ‘Sitka Spruce’ top, with the sides and back of a hand-made (highly figured and book matched) Indian Rosewood/Mahogany laminate (as per Selmer). This combination provides great sustain, firm bass tones, bite in the mid-range and airy highs. The ‘Walnut’ neck is an accurate reproduction of the original ‘Selmer’ neck that matched, with the extended 24 nickel fretted ‘Ebony’ fingerboard, makes for an awesome combination, with the ‘Walnut’ element providing strong midrange tones and warm lows and the ‘Ebony’ fingerboard extenuating tremendous percussive rhythm capabilities, and tonal qualities. The headstock is of typical manouche design with ‘David Hodson’ logo and completed with the stunning gold Schaller Fustero-Lyra type engraved machine heads, which all turn freely and hold the string tension well. This fine quality instrument has been lightly played, and lovingly cherished. The beautiful cleaned, and oiled Ebony fingerboard is complimented by the original frets, presenting minimal playtime. Its finish is positively glossy, and rich, save for some very light surface polishing swirls and some minor handling/play marks; consummate with its age, and absolutely no rear rash as can be seen in the condition photosCurrently strung with D'Addario Pro Arte EJ46 strings, which sound superb fingerstyle, or picked, the guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. The action is low and easy-playing, with the overall sound simply described as: rich, deep, with great projection, as a ‘Maccaferri’ should!A more conventional gypsy tone could be achieved by using Thomastik Infeld KF 110s or KR 116s, which impart more of a steel string sound whilst imposing no more load than nylon strings as they are low tension strings. To finish, this master crafted, custom-made; electric/crossover, guitar is fitted with a passive pickup to ensure the most natural sound transference when amplified. The fitted hard-shell case is in great condition, with all catches working perfectly. Please review all photos carefully as they form a major part of the description. We can provide addition photos and information on request. An extremely rare opportunity to purchase a very fine, high quality custom-made instrument, by one of the UK’s most renowned manouche guitar luthiers – David Hodson.Highly desirable and sort after by Collectors, Investors and Discerning Stage Players, significantly appreciating in value over the past few years due to the extremely limited examples of his master crafted instruments; made in the image, style and tone of the original Selmer 1932 design, made famous by Django, rarely coming to market. Not just a truly great and unique guitar but a very sound investment piece.
