ROLAND JX3P WITH PG 200
"The JX-3P is something of a hidden treasure, there's more to it than meets the eye. It was released around the same time as the venerable JUNO series, but represents a shift from the traditional analog synthesizer interface to a less practical format. The JX-3P was primarily aimed at players looking for those great stable Roland sounds of the era, but with immediate preset-based access, and only the most basic, user-friendly onboard controls to adjust them. (Note the space reserved on board to hold the partitions in place).
That's not to say that it's a stupid synth, but rather, the digital technologies Roland was exploring at the time allowed for greater programmability while simultaneously reducing the need for convenient controllers dedicated per parameter, one way which most synth makers borrowed in the eighties. This means that sliders and buttons have been phased out in favor of pushbuttons, fewer sliders and a powerful programming interface hidden “under the hood”.
The JX-3P shares the same excellent analog filters and VCA as the JUNO and even the JUPITER series. Like the JUNO, it is a six-voice polyphonic feeding digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs) through analog filters, envelopes and amps. However, the JX-3P has two oscillators per voice instead of the single oscillator found in JUNO synths, and while this allows for greater flexibility, the onboard programming interface is much less fun and convenient than that of a JUNO , undoubtedly contributing to the popularity of the JUNO series over the JX-3P. You'll need the optional PG-200 programmer if you want a real hands-on experience with the JX-3P. Surprisingly, the JX-3P is MIDI equipped, in fact it was Roland's first MIDI synthesizer. However, its MIDI was limited to basic note on/off information only. Synths like the JUNO 106 had a much better MIDI implementation. But the JX-3P also featured a built-in 128-step sequencer and was available in a (slightly modified) rack-mounted version called the MKS-30 Planet-S.Although the JX-3P is not as popular as a JUNO, it is a great vintage synth capable of creating lush classic analog sounds. And without the cult status of other similar synths, they can also be found at rock bottom prices, making them a synth to consider when searching for those classic Roland sounds from the early 80s."
