We are big fans of G&L's satin top coat, and it works great on many of their finishes, both solids and bursts. In case of Jet Bass it gives this ASAT bass a no-nonsense almost industrial look. The ASAT bass melds Leo's famous Tele shape with G&L's flexible passive/active electronics and full-range MFD pickups. With it's fully contoured body and J-bass inspired neck profile, the ASAT is both comfortable and looks like no other bass. This USA ASAT Bass features: Jet Black satin frost on Alder, 9.4 pounds Rear body contour Front body contour Vintage satin tint maple neck Synthetic abalone top dots #8 Medium C neck, 9.5" radius, 1-1/2" width at the nut G&L tuners with lightweight aluminum split posts Hefty Saddle Lock bridge (a side set screw clamps the saddles for better sustain and fewer vibrations) (2) G&L MDF humbucking pickups Volume, treble and bass controls Three way pickup toggle Mini toggle for series/parallel pickup configuration Mini toggle for passive/active/active + high boost operation Plek fret finishing G&L gig bag Made in Fullerton, CA The ASAT bass is electronically the same as the G&L L-2000, but offers the player a very different look than the PB-inspired L-2000 shape. And with such a wide range of control options, the ASAT bass is a treasure trove of classic bass tones. G&L's MFD pickup design harmoniously combines strong output with a wide and balanced frequency response. Combined with both bass and treble controls (with active or passive mode) there is tremendous sonic flexibility. So let's start with the three position pickup selector: The neck pickup is big and round with lots of low end presence, and a smooth top end. It's big without being boomy or muddy. The MFD bridge pickup has a good bit of twang and treble response, but not quite as bright and metallic as a J-bass. Both pickups combined is nicely balanced, with good definition and string separation (this is typically our go-to position). In addition to the 3-way pickup selector there is also a toggle to put each pickup in either series or parallel mode. Series Mode - Fat, meaty tones with an accentuated midrange growl that still have plenty of articulation, especially when using a pick. Just the ticket for rock, punk and heavier styles of music Parallel - More snap and pop than series mode, and similar to P-J bass tone. Great for jazz, pop, and funk. Most often rather than changing pickup position, we tend to toggle between series and parallel to suit the mood of the particular song. All of the above options are available in passive mode, active mode, or active with a high end EQ boost. The difference between active and passive is not dramatic, but active mode is a little crisper with a slightly quicker attack and more responsive tone controls. Neither is "better" and it is easy to dial in great sounds with either. More than anything else the selection of active or passive may come down to what type of amplifier you are using. While the ASAT bass balances nicely on the shoulder, the unique "Tele" shape is different in terms of most bass guitars.  G&L thoughtfully provides two different strap button locations at the bottom of the guitar to allow the option of two different balance points. For gigging or studio work, the ASAT Bass offers out-of-the-box looks, and a vast array of tonal options.
