This vintage guitar has been owned by the Seller since 2017 and is an all-original 1961 Martin O-16NY, with 1961 being the first year of production for this model, serial #179725. It was designed from an earlier New York-made 1898 Martin guitar, and was re-introduced in 1961 as a response to the Folk music revival at that time. An October 2023 appraisal by Gruhn Guitars in Nashville, TN noted: “We certify the instrument described below is, in our opinion, a Martin style 0-16NY acoustic flat-top guitar, made in the year 1961. Current market value: $3,500.Instruments made with Brazilian rosewood components (dalhergia nigra) are very highly prized by collectors as well as musicians and can command premium prices. Upon examination, we note that the bridge is lifting from the top, but otherwise, this guitar appears structurally to be in excellent condition.Based on the photos provided to Gruhn Guitars, the finish appears to be original and exhibits typical deterioration with lacquer checking, small impact marks, surface scratches, compression marks, and edge-chipping.Sitka spruce top with X-bracing and natural finish, mahogany back and sides, multi-ply white & black sound hole rosette, rectangular Brazilian rosewood bridge with “through-style” saddle, black plastic bridge pins with white center dot, mahogany neck with slotted peghead, Brazilian rosewood peghead overlay, gold-color “C. F. Martin” logo peghead decal, three-on-a-strip side-mount open-back tuners with white plastic buttons, 19 fret Brazilian rosewood fingerboard (e.g. wide – no radius) with 12 frets clear of the body and no inlay, and multi-ply edge binding with tortoiseshell grain exterior ply on body top only. The instrument is currently housed in a Gibson hard-shell case from a much later period (e.g. circa 1990’s) with a textured black exterior covering.”
