Though it's impossible not to compare the two, the ES-339 is an entirely different beast with a different sonic fingerprint than the ES-335. It may be smaller in stature, but it stands as an equal in the tone department. The Perks of a Small Body Because of its smaller body, the ES-339 has a more focused, clearer tone than most large-bodied semi-hollows. It also sharpens the articulation and makes the attack snappier. The ES-339 also has a bit less headroom acoustically, which translates to a more even, consistent sound when plugged in. Also, in general, it responds to the player's input more quickly than a larger guitar. Finally, though it may seem obvious to do so, it's worth mentioning that the 339's smaller size makes it more accessible for players who struggle with bulkier instruments. Body size aside, it also plays easy like Sunday morning thanks to its just-right rounded C-shaped neck profile with medium jumbo frets. Gibson's build emphasizes these natural strengths. The body is made of 3 plies (maple/poplar/maple) to make the ES-339 a gig-worthy dependable workhorse. It also makes the guitar resonate in a three-dimensional, open manner. The bridge pickup has punchy midrange that can really snarl when you dig in, tight lows, and plenty of bell-like chime in the highs.
