The venerable Moog MiniMoog Model D, seen here from 1977! Ubiquitous with culturally-important, popular music recordings and live performances for every single genre of music, countless hits, and as important to musical instrument history as any famous guitar.
This one is from the mid-late part of the decade yet still retains the famed and desirable old-oscillator board that would give way to a more stable and, consequently, more predictable revision only months later. However, this one has had an overhaul to bring it within a stability threshold required by recording professionals while still retaining that classic girth, grit, and supreme low-end. No surprises here, just quintessential tone and performance so your ideas and performances can come alive!
Servicing performed:
- full electrolytic recap- power supply rebuild- summing resistors updated with matched metal film (a critical update)- op amp and 3046 transistor array replacement with socket installation- buss bar polished of any corrosion- NOS Mod & Pitch wheel installation (the originals were cracked, replaced with OEM part)- keybed leveled and re-bushed- corroded fuse holder replaced- full tuning and calibration
As you‘ve probably noticed, vintage MiniMoog’s have a few thousand dollars of price swing on the market, including brand new reissues coming in at $5,000. Not only do the reissues not sound like the original, they aren’t serviceable like the originals, so they are essentially a ticking time bomb. You are far, far better off investing in an original than trying to save a few bucks on a vastly inferior product. Your recordings and your clients will thank you. Also, if you are trying to save money on a Minimoog and you’re toying with the idea of buying one that hasn’t had the aforementioned servicing, you are making a mistake that will only 1) add time without it because it’ll immediately need to be in the hands of a repairman and 2) end up costing the same or more than a nice example like this that is ready-to-go right out of the box. And if you’re looking at this from a vintage guitar collecting mentality, know that unserviced/unrestored synthesizers and all-original guitars are not even remotely similar or comparable when it comes to market value or desirability. The last thing any serious musician (or knowledgeable vintage synth collector/user) should want to hear regarding a vintage synthesizer is “all original”.
This is a beautiful Mini that would be right at home in any setting, be it a high-caliber studio, practice space, or home recording setup. Sure to please right out of the box — it’s ready to go!
