On launch Mercedes-Benz wrote, “190 SL successfully and skilfully combines the characteristics of a high-performance sports car with the comfort of a touring car, and offers the sporting driver those qualities of acceleration, road holding, manoeuvrability and exciting top speed which make driving a pleasure and every road a challenge.” A huge sales hit in the USA the 190 SL is still known for its memorable film appearances, in features such as the Hollywood film High Society with Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra as her co-driver. Taking its styling cues from the race-bred 300 SL, the iconic 190 SL Roadster began production in 1955, and was an instant hit in both West Germany and in export markets. The 1897cc overhead camshaft four-cylinder M121 engine was featured in a Mercedes-Benz for the very first time. With its twin Solex carburettors, the engine produced 120 hp. It also boasted fully independent suspension double wishbones and swing axles at the rear. Our 190 SL spent its life in Belgium from new and had one owner for 50 years before being fully restored, photographic record on file, and then coming to the UK in 2016. Marque experts have looked after the car since. It is undoubtedly one of those designs whose perfect proportions continue to inspire even sixty years after its production ended. Between 1955 and 1963 this model was considered the Daimler-Benz sports car. Available now with a 12 month RAC warranty and ready to view at our London showroom.
