The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was first displayed at the New York motor show in 1954 and can be largely credited to Max Hoffman who foresaw that the competition success of the 300 SL Gullwing could translate into a popular vehicle for the USA market. The 190 sat at half the price of its bigger 6-cylinder brother in the 300SL and subsequently outsold the more expensive model eight-fold.
190 SLs were produced between 1955-1963, with around 70% of these being delivered to the USA. It was the stunning design and complete usability of the car that suited the US market so well, especially in states such as California.
The RHD car we are pleased to offer for sale has recently completed a ground up restoration with specialists Doctor Classic in Poland. The car was treated to a bare metal respray in gloss black and the interior was fully retrimmed in Tan leather with light brown weaved carpets. The car received a new Tan coloured canvas hood and all exterior brightwork has been refinished. A full mechanical overhaul was also carried out including an engine and transmission rebuild, a total renovation of the suspension and braking system as well as an electric equipment and wiring rebuild.
The quality of work done is exceptional and the car presents superbly throughout. It is accompanied by a number of historic servicing invoices and MOT certificates dating back to the early 1970s as well as a large number of photographs documenting the recent restoration process.
The 190 SL represents the epitome of Mercedes-Benz engineering and timeless style and would be a fine addition to any classic car collection. Contact us now for more information or to arrange a viewing.
