Year: 2020 Engine: 3995cc Exterior Colour: Gentian Blue Metallic Interior Colour: Black Leather/Alcantara Mileage: 17,600 Transmission: Manual Service History: Full Previous Owners: 3 Porsche has always been a bit left field. The 1969 Volkswagen love child - a mid-engined, rear wheel drive, 2 seater sports car, the Porsche 914 was very much genesis for the Boxster and Cayman that would follow in its footsteps. Fast forward to 2020 and the 718 Cayman GT4 is the ultimate mid-engined, rear-wheel drive two seater sports car, deserving of every word of praise I am about to lavish on it. A fast road track developed cruise missile that's as at home on the M6 as it is at Brands Hatch. In a climate of over burdened and wide-bodied coupes, the GT4 is Usain Bolt, attending a sports day father's race, ready to obliterate a tired and overweight generation of peers. It’s every bit the car the 911 wishes it still was. The GT4 separates itself from the Cayman and 911 range by being the only offering that favours higher displacement naturally aspirated power. A 4.0 litre flat six heart beats in the chest of this rear wheel drive sports coupe. Despite a new emissions friendly exhaust system increasing the weight of the GT4 by some 35kg over the previous 918 it nonetheless delivers a staggering 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds and a lap time of 7 minutes 28 seconds at the Nordschleife circuit, an unbelievable twelve seconds faster than the previous 918 GT4! With a lap time identical to the cult 997 GT3 R.S, you would be forgiven for thinking that this Gentian Blue GT4 shares the same engine as the bigger GT3. It is in fact a 3.0 litre flat-six twin turbo from the 992, with the turbo’s left on the shelf and the engine bored out to produce an extra 1014cc of displacement, the result is a engine that looses none of the excitement of the GT3 RS, and produces 414bhp at 7,600rpm and 420 N·m of torque with an earth stopping top speed of 189mph! There’s no complicated rear axle steering or heavy four-wheel drive system, power is sent directly to the rear wheels, kept in check by an old school mechanical limited slip differential. Despite an exceedingly long second gear, which comes into its own in slow moving traffic, the 6-speed manual gearbox’s short throw is one of the best in the game. With a lighter clutch than its Spyder counterpart and the GT3 RS with which it shares so many components, it is perfectly suited to the GT4. Whilst available with a PDK auto, we needn’t talk about such things here, there’s simply no need. The six speed manual is both direct and engaging when you want a spirited drive and with auto blip activated it offers a satisfying primordial growl on the downshift. When touring cross country - and tour you can, the gearbox is casual and sympathetic. For a narrow, mid-engined, two-seater sports car, it is a genuine tardis. An impressive 602 litres of cubby space serve to stow away the bags, boots and umbrellas required for a weekend in the Cotswolds. For those who choose not to engage the active exhaust system and conduct a symphony of wroughty engine notes, a high quality Bose sound system and user friendly infotainment system feel years ahead of those found in Porsches of old. Aerodynamics play a pivotal role in the design of the GT4. Sculpted front splitters, full underbody cladding and functional rear diffuser combine to create not only a striking and understated profile but when paired with a subtle rear wing work to create over 120kg of down force when the GT4 is pushing on at full chat! Seriously impressive for a car that looks at home in a modest family garage. Although iconic, the 911 is inherently flawed. Porsche has worked stubbornly for decades to overcome the difficulties of having an engine slung over the rear wheels, producing some of the most innovative chassis and suspension set-ups the motoring world has ever seen. So what happens when Porsche take the already sublime fully adjustable suspension from the 991 GT3 and transplant them into a small, nimble rearwheel drive and crucially here, mid engined platform? The result is quite simply otherworldly. The GT4 changes direction like a fly, no other car feels as stable poised whilst managing to retain the comfort and compliance that driving in the UK demands. Body roll is non-existent, the high sided carbon fibre bucket seats securing the driver in place as the chassis simply revolves around this central focus point. The Alcantara steering wheel is free of buttons (distractions), positioned front and centre ready to respond to the whim and fancy of its charge. Huge six pot front brake calipers are a snug fit under 20" alloy wheels unique to the GT4, with this example benefitting from the PCCB ceramic disc brakes front and rear - an optional extra that cost the original owner over £5500. It's hard to quantify a machine like the GT4, a car that is so much greater than the sum of its parts, superb parts that they are. It's not a car that you dominate and control, but a symbiotic partnership, a bond forged as driver and car learn their limitations together. We are delighted to offer this Gentian Blue Porsche Cayman 718 GT4. The car will be handed over to the new owner with all original service wallet, handbooks, fully stamped service book, original brochures, spare keys, Tracker documents, history file and a fresh 1 year MOT.
