The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was jointly developed in an era when the German manufacturer owned a large share of the Woking outfit as well as being the sole supplier of engines for their Formula 1 team. A partnership which spanned 19 years and brought 3 drivers championships.
The SLR or ‘Sport Leicht Rennsport’ was inspired by the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe and was designed by none other than Gordon Murray and made use of butterfly doors. At the time, it was part of the original ‘Holy Trinity’ along with the Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT, although the SLR was more focused on being a Grand Tourer.
The full carbon fibre-reinforced monocoque is clad with carbon fibre body panels and is propelled by a 5.4 litre V8 supercharged engine producing 617bhp with a top speed of 207mph. Stopping power is provided by carbon ceramic brakes and the car features an active aerodynamics system which makes use of the rear spoiler as an air brake when required. The side exit exhausts aren’t just for styling but a necessity due to the use of a flat underbody and rear diffuser to improve downforce.
