A Big Turbo Ford Escort RS Cosworth Luxury with 24,716 miles and two owners. MODEL HISTORY The Ford Escort RS Cosworth was a sports derivative and rally homologation special of the fifth generation Ford Escort. It was designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship. It was available as a road car from 1992-96 in limited numbers from Ford’s Specialist Vehicle Engineering, (SVE), team. It combines the hand-assembled engine expertise of Cosworth and the coach-building crafts of Karmann. In order to accommodate the larger Cosworth engine and transmission Ford developed the car around the chassis and mechanicals of its predecessor, the Sierra Cosworth. A very rare car with only 7,145 examples being produced and this one of the early 2,500 Big Turbo examples built for homologation. (Source Wikipedia, 1995 Edition One RS Brochure and the RS Owners Club). EQUIPMENT Body colour front bumper with black lower splitter, louvred bonnet air intakes, wing air extraction grilles, aerodynamic rear wing with lower boot spoiler, electro-luminescent instrument cluster, oil pressure gauge, turbo gauge, voltmeter, quartz digital clock with ambient temperature, map reading lights, glove box illumination. Luxury Pack Equipment; Opening rear quarter windows, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, ‘Quickclear’ heated windscreen, heated washer jets, three-spoke leather covered steering wheel, central double locking, tailgate release, lights on warning, rear centre armrest, rear head restraints, sunroof, electric windows. Factory options; Leather upholstery, high specification floor mats. Accessories; Magnex stainless steel exhaust system, Sigma Category 1 alarm system, genuine Ford headlamp protectors. EXTERIOR Finished in one of five launch colours, this gorgeous and rare Pacifica Blue, (Code J2), example has covered just 24,716 miles from new with two owners. Subject to ceramic coating treatment in 2023 at a cost of £1,200, the paintwork boasts a professional detailed shine from the smooth polished exterior with no imperfections worthy of mention other than some miniscule frontal stone chips. Early homologation features include the exposed petrol cap and larger door mirrors. All exterior trim, factory glass, rubbers and badges are in excellent order and the headlamps still wear genuine Ford headlamp protectors. The real wow factor comes with the underside which has been subject to the highest-level photo-documented detailing without loss of original features such as the hand-brushed black protective paint over the hand stamped chassis number. One for the Blue Oval fanatic and incredible in every respect. INTERIOR The interior of this Luxury specification Escort Cosworth is a very special place to be. The perforated Raven Leather Recaro upholstery, (Code LW), is spotlessly clean and in amazing condition, very unusual for Ford leather! The cut-pile carpets are perfect and still protected by genuine Ford floor mats which are the ultra-rare high specification in deep blue to harmonise with the exterior finish. The comprehensive electro-luminescent instrument panel is all functional, as are all gauges and controls including the factory fitted 2007 radio/cassette. The boot area is pristine with areas of factory wax in hidden apertures. The factory fitted space-saver spare wheel and correct jack still wear the sculptured carpeted covers. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION The powerful and well proven Cosworth 2.0 litre 16v turbocharged YBT engine features the larger Garrett T3/T04B turbocharger with a two-stage water/air and air/air intercooler together with an electronically regulated over-boost facility. Being an early car, it is also fitted with the desirable Weber-Marelli fuelling and ignition system. The blue painted cam cover denotes a number of significant changes over the older YBG unit of the Sierra RS Cosworth and power is quoted at 225bhp with 0-60 in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 140mph. The engine bay is absolutely untouched with all factory labels and plates intact as well as the original head shield. The permanent Ferguson four-wheel drive system with 34/66% front/rear power split mated to a MT75 5-speed gearbox is light and direct. WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES The design classic original 8 X 16” Ronal soft-spoke alloy wheels are in excellent order aside from a few minuscule marks to the untouched factory wheels. Matching premium branded and correct specification Pirelli PZero Asimmetrico 225/45 ZR16 tyres have masses of tread remaining. Electrically-controlled ABS anti-lock system with two microprocessors and ventilated front and rear discs offer immense stopping power. HISTORY FILE Built at the Rheine Assembly Plant in Germany in November 1992 and registered new on the 15th January 1993, this example is one of the highly sought-after 2,500 large turbo homologation specials on a K registration. Supplied by Ford RS Dealer, Tony Brooks of Weybridge, their supplying dealership rear screen sticker and tax discs holder are still fitted and the book pack still has the staff business cards and dealer keyrings. The history file is quite phenomenal and thorough perusal of such would consume many hours! Beautifully presented in separate folders, there are masses of chronologically filed service invoices and virtually every MOT and the original service books holds 14 stamped entries. All servicing is fully up to date and the cambelt was changed in Jun 2022. Three original keys are present including the master blade. A separate file holds RS Owners Club membership documentation and multiple agreed valuations, the most recent being £82,000 in 2021. The previous owner is an RS Owners Club member and was Vice Chairman of the Hertfordshire and North London RS Owners Club. Two magazines, Fast Ford and Practical Classics, have used this very car which was chosen for its amazing condition and provenance to feature in a detailed buyer’s guide. This rare example is exceptional in every respect and offers strong appeal for the avid collector and Ford afficionado alike. MOT June 2024, HPI Clear.
