"Across The River and Into The Trees" by Ernest Hemingway 1950 First English Edition Vintage Hardcover Book with Dust Jacket 7 3/4" x 5 1/4" 254 Pages The jacket is in good minus condition with edge wear, nicks, a few small tears and tape on the inside. The jacket is now protected with a Mylar cover. The hardcover book is in good minus condition free from rips, tears, bends and writing. The previous owner's name is written in blue ink on the front free end page and there is a number and initial written on the copyright page in blue ink. The front end page has very faint foxing. The boards are in good minus condition with a few small spots and light edge wear. The binding is tight and square.

Across the River and Into the Trees is a novel by American writer Ernest Hemingway, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1950, after first being serialized in Cosmopolitan magazine. The title derives from the last words of U.S. Civil War Confederate General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson: “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.” Hemingway's novel chronicles the experiences of Colonel Richard Cantwell, an aging officer in the U.S. Army, during a weekend duck-hunting trip in Italy. Reflecting on his past and his love affair with a young countess, Cantwell's narrative captures themes of love, war, youth, and age.
