Description

Centenary Edition, 3 vols, quarto, numerous illustrations (many coloured), original blue decorative cloth, vignette on upper covers. Accompanied by a facsimile of the rare original prospectus for volumes 1 and 2. The publishers have pleasure in announcing the reprinting of the three volumes of The South Polar Times as originally printed - volumes 1 and 2 in 1907, and volume 3 in 1914. Started in 1902, The South Polar Times was produced in Antarctica on Captain Scott's epic expeditions on the 'Discovery' and 'Terra Nova' - the latter being the disastrous "Last Expedition". It is a periodical written, illustrated and edited by members of the expedition - including the heroic Ernest Shackleton. It gives a fascinating insight into the life and work of the polar explorers in Antarctica. The South Polar Times is one of the scarcest and most desirable books of polar literature, with copies selling for many thousands of pounds on the rare occasions when a set comes on the market. The Centenary Edition is strictly limited to 350 copies. In three volumes, it is a faithful facsimile of the original edition with all the colour and monochrome illustrations reproduced. The set is uniformly bound in blue cloth, with gilt decorations, and pictorial inlays. A handsome addition to any collection of Antarctica.
