Large octavo, 260pp., plus preliminary ad leaf (dated August, 1860), and 4pp. of advertisements at rear (in the second state, with "Mulock" spelled correctly, etc.). Second issue binding, with the titular woman stamped in blind (black? in any event, not white) on the spine. Corners, spine ends, and outer joints show wear, 19th century ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Contents otherwise clean and sound; good. Among the earliest "detective" novels, and one of the Haycraft-Queen Cornerstones.
