Description

Here is an instant collection of 39 Tauchnitz editions of H. Rider Haggard Novels. Comprised of both hardback and softback editions. There are 21 hardbacks; 19 in original publisher's binding(!) and 2 rebound. There are also an additional 18 softbacks. Overall a great looking group, almost all are in VG condition; many of these are very rare. All are listed in the Whatmore bibliography. Lengthy details below, and please inquire for additional needed info or more pics. Likely the largest Tauchnitz grouping of Haggard's in the US. The following 19 hardbacks are in the publisher's original binding of red paper boards over red cloth spine with spine lettered in gold and decorated in brown and black, cover stamped with publisher's design in blind, top edge stained red, and with beige end papers. All in VG or better condition and have slight forward lean [from stacking], modest wear and/or fading, and may have names or bookseller pencils on prelims. Any major defect will be mentioned. Some are first printings and others are reprints as can be denoted from the Editions in print page, and so I am listing the copyright dates as well as the quantity of titles listed to give a better idea of the printing. King Solomon's Mines T2386 [1886, 35 titles], She in two volumes T2445/2446 [both 1887, 34 titles], Jess in two volumes T2451/2452 [1887, 29 titles], The Witch's Head in two volumes T2482/2483 [1887, 17 titles], Maiwa's Revenge T2530 [1888, 23 titles], Cleopatra in two volumes T2592/2593 [1889, 27 volumes], Allan Quatermain in two volumes T2742/2743 [1887, 33 titles], Dawn it two volumes T2825/2826 [1892, 13 titles, 1" cloth split at top of spine on V1], Ayesha in two volumes T3848/3849 [1905, 29 titles], The Way of the Spirit in two volumes T3883/3884 [1906, 30 titles], Red Eve T4287 [1911, 33 titles]. Also another set of Ayesha lacking half title pages and rebound in maybe white calf, good condition but kinda shabby with toning, foxing, and slightly warped boards. The paperbacks average VG condition with varying degrees of paper toning and spine creases, edge wear, and small tears or a bit of over separation. They mostly have a publisher's catalog or list of latest editions at rear which I will denote along with any notable defects. She [only Vol. 1 of the two volume set, T2445 [1887, May 1919, ink mark on cover], The Witch's Head in two volumes T2482/2483 [1887, September and July 1902], The Wizard T3191 [1897, Feb. 1914], Doctor Therne T3336 [1899, Feb. 1899, ink spots on cover], Swallow in two volumes T3355/3356 [1899, Autumn 1920], Black Heart and White Heart T3440 [1900, Aug. 1900, sticker and soil on cover], Ayesha in two volumesT2849/3850 [1905, Sept and Nov 1922, owners stamp on 1st page dated 1923], The Lady of Blossholme T4158 [1909, My 1924], Red Eve T4287 [1911, July 1913, tape at spine ends], Child of Storm T4391 [1913, Feb 1913, spine fully taped], Wisdom's Daughter T4602 [1923, May 1923], Queen of the Dawn T4686 [1925, May 1925], The Treasure of the Lake T4755 [1926, Dec 1926, 1st signature a bit loose].
