Fifth edition and first posthumous edition, with new material, including extensive quotations from Locke's writings and footnotes regarding Bishop Stillingfleet. Yolton 65. Notwithstanding the fact that the fifth edition was not issued with a frontispiece portrait of Locke, laid into this copy is a frontispiece portrait ----- First published in 1689. Locke continued to work on the "Essay" after 1690. Four editions were published during his lifetime, and he left material for a revised fifth edition. All subsequent editions follow the text of the fifth, although some omit the footnotes. A superior copy of Locke's most popular and enduring work.
