Notwithstanding the fact that the fifth edition was not issued with a frontispiece portrait of Locke, laid into this copy is a frontispiece portrait ----- First published in 1689. Locke continued to work on the "Essay" after 1690. Four editions were published during his lifetime, and he left material for a revised fifth edition. All subsequent editions follow the text of the fifth, although some omit the footnotes. A superior copy of Locke's most popular and enduring work.
