Description

Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen, 1896, First Impression of Macmillan Edition, Illustrated by Hugh Thomson The stunning first impression of the Macmillan edition printed in 1896 is quite scarce but in this condition incredibly rare. The binding is quite remarkable - perfectly straight and tight, the beautifully designed red front board is exceptionally bright, the spine dulled and the rear boards with some rubbing. Minor creasing to the top and base of the spine and minimal rubbing to the four corners. The "Peacock" designed endpapers are bright and clean with some slight darkening. Tissue guard in place. The pages retain their gilt to all three edges and are totally without marks, creasing, foxing or darkening. Beautifully written owner's name and date (1900) to first free page. Very slight bleed from printing which has given first three pages only small red tinge to page edge (not visible when looking at spine block). A superb copy of an iconic volume. Extremely rare in this condition. Will be dispatched by courier, fully insured and very well packaged in bubblewrap and a cardboard box.
