First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Beloved is Morrison's most acclaimed work and earned her the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. A film adaptation, starring Oprah Winfrey, was released in 1998.
Writing in the New York Times, John Irving describes the work as "another triumph" and praises Morrison's "versatility and technical and emotional range [which] appear to know no bounds... Beloved is written in an antiminimalist prose that is by turns rich, graceful, eccentric, rough, lyrical, sinuous, colloquial and very much to the point" (29 March 1987).
Octavo. Original cream cloth, spine lettered and front cover decorated in silver, publisher's device on rear cover in blind. With dust jacket.
Blind stamp of "Library of the Changs" to front free endpaper. Very light foxing to edges, faint browning to endpapers; faint toning and creasing to jacket, short closed tear to head of front outer fold, unclipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
