An uncommon early British edition of Hawthorne's classic American novel, Note in ink front end page states "rebound July 28, 1898", a fine late 19th c. binding of half red crushed morocco over marbled boards, five raised bands with polshed red labels, gilt lettering, rules, and decorations, marbled end papers, top edge gilt. Near Fine, small rubs at spine and corners and light shelf rubs, an early seller's catalog listing pasted in front end page showing date of publication as 1859, pencil dates of 1859 and 1866 title page and frontis. A quite lovely copy of this illustrated edition, appropriately bound in red..
