Danielewski was born March 5, 1966 in New York City to the Polish avante-garde director Tad Danielewski and Priscilla Decatur Machold. Danielewski would travel across the world, having lived in six different countries by 10 for his father's film work, eventually settling for a time in Provo, Utah where Danielewski and his sister graduated highschool. These experiences traveling about greatly inspired Danielewski to appreciate creativity in all its forms. "House of Leaves" would come about from a story he wrote in 1990 while en-route to see his dying father. Though that story was torn up in anger, Danielewski's sister would tape it back together, leading him to use it as basis for the novel. After thirty-two rejections, "House of Leaves" was picked up by the Pantheon publishing house. While it saw some commercial success and won the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award, it did not achieve wider public success, earning itself a passionate cult following. 1388127.
