He takes a job teaching at a brutal school, run by the cruel Mr. Wackford Squeers. Eventually, Nicholas and his family join a traveling theater company, where he falls in love with a young actress. Along the way, he encounters a variety of colorful characters, including the scheming Ralph Nickleby, his nephew's archenemy. The novel is a satirical critique of social and economic injustices of Victorian England.
