First edition, first printing of an American classic, inscribed and dated by the author on the ffep. Very rarely found these days. The top part of the inscription, including the name of the recipients, is unclear. It appears as if there was some sort of sticker, perhaps one of those annoying stickers carrying the owner's name, was pasted on the page and then removed, lifting some of the inscription. It was inscribed five years after the book's publication, at Il d'Orleans, Quebec, an island in the middle of the Saint Lawrence River near Quebec City. If there is an mystery about the recipient, he has written his name and date on the title page. Also, in another abuse, however well-meaning, the previous owners have pasted a newspaper review on the two open pages before the novel's first chapter. All as illustrated. In short, not a perfect book, but one that could easily stand between good and very good. Alas, no dust jacket, but with the A-P first issue designation.
