FIRST EDITION. 1st impression. Inscribed by the Author on the title page. Illustrated with colour frontis and sepia printed line illustrations throughout, including the endpapers, by Diana Stanley. Green cloth boards with burgundy lettering and illustration to the spine and front board. A very good copy of the book in near very good colour dustwrapper which has some loss to the top and bottom of the spine, affecting some of the letters in the Publishers name. The rear panel is a little marked but the rest of the wrapper is generally very bright. Price still intact on the inner front flap. ---- The inscription reads; "For the Jeffery children, with best wishes from Mary Norton.". I have been unable to find out who the Jeffery Children are. Overall a very good copy of the first printing of the first title in the Borrowers series. Scarce signed by the Author. ----- Grolier Club, One hundred books famous in Children's Literature. no. 91. Norton won the 1952 Carnegie Medal from the Library Association, recognising The Borrowers as the year's outstanding children's book by a British author. For the 70th anniversary of the Medal in 2007 it was named one of the top 10 winning works, selected by a panel to compose the ballot for a public election of the all-time favourite. --- More photos available on request.
