Hilton, James. GOODBYE MR. CHIPS. Boston: Little, Brown, 1935. Signed Limited Edition (#3/600) also known as The Birthday Edition, having been published on the first anniversary of the actual first edition, but with new and charming illustrations by H. M. Brock throughout. Quarter Japanese vellum over paper colored boards. Fine condition in a complete but slightly worn and browned numbered slipcase. Signed by Hilton and Brock on the limitation page. Stunning PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by the author to Leonard Cutts, the longtime managing partner of the British publishing house of Hodder & Stoughton, publishers of the 1934 First Edition of Mr. Chips, who arranged the publication of this particular edition. "To Leonard/ from James/ on the auspicious occasion of his Chips's First Birthday/ June 1935." Attached to the front paste-down of the book is a small card commemorating the further presentation of this particular inscribed copy in 1972 to another publisher William Barbour. In short, we believe this to be THE most desirable presentation copy of this most glamourous of all the dozens of Goodbye Mr. Chips editions. Basis for the Oscar-winning 1939 film adaptation.
