THE UNVANQUISHED was the first of Faulkner's books published in the US to be illustrated (by Edward Shenton, house illustrator for SCRIBNER'S, who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under two students of Howard Pyle). Set in Mississippi during and after the US Civil War, the novel follows members of the Sartoris family, whose later doings were chronicled in the earlier SARTORIS; and Ab Snopes, of the Yoknatawpha Snopeses, "one of the most pernicious families in all of Faulkner" (Padgett).
