Charles Edward Mudie (1818-1890) was a London bookseller and publisher who founded his business in 1840. He became famous for successful circulating library which played a major role in sustaining the popularity of the three-volume novel format. The company also offered bookbinding services, in the bindery division based in the upper floors of the New Oxford Street building. Mudie's business continued for a few decades after his death, closing in 1937. The stories of the Jungle Book were published in periodicals in 1893 and 1894.
