First Collot edition, first printing, extra-limited issue, number 6 of 12 copies on "vélin d'arches pur chiffon a la forme", containing additional illustrations, and with the suite of separate plates at the rear (out of a total edition of 950 copies). This copy is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen.
Savrola, first published in 1900, is Churchill's only novel, a melodramatic tale of liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state. This edition, richly illustrated by the prominent French artist André Collot, is "the finest presentation of Savrola and perhaps the most elegant Churchill work... This magnificent edition is overlooked by many collectors because it is not in English. They are missing a great deal. No serious Churchill library is complete without it" (Langworth, pp. 48-9).
Provenance: Ronald Cohen, with his ownership inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper. Cohen's Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, published in three volumes in 2006, is the authoritative source for collectors, librarians, and dealers.
Quarto. Loose gatherings in cream wrappers within glassine, in card chemise and slipcase (all as issued).
Colour frontispiece, illustration at head of each chapter in colour, each of which also as separate black and white plate in glassine sleeve at rear.
