Pynchon's postmodern epic won the 1973 US National Book Award for Fiction and was selected by the Pulitzer Prize jury on fiction for the 1974 prize, a decision blocked by the Pulitzer advisory board because of the novel's explicit content. Pynchon's biographer Tony Tanner hailed the work as "both one of the great historical novels of our time and arguably the most important literary text since Ulysses" (p. 75).
