Bobbs-Merrill. Indianapolis. New York. 1943. 754 pages. First edition STATED, 1st printing. In first state, original red cloth. The first printing of this title was cased in red cloth and limited to a print run of only 7,500 copies. A second state was housed in green cloth, and had a print run of 12,500 copies. This specific copy of the first edition, first printing in red cloth has multiple serious flaws and requires restoration. Title page shows chipping along edges; verso is the copyright page with the First Edition statement. Front endpapers and half-title page are excised. Rear endpapers are all present. The original page 367 was replaced with a typed replacement page, and because its font is bigger, the replaced page is two leaves instead of one. Old Scotch tape in gutters and on a couple of pages. Ink on pastedowns. Hinges are weak with webbing showing. A chunk of paper is missing off rear pastedown. Shelf-rubbing to cloth along edges. No library marking whatsoever; however flaws make this a restoration project.
