Description

First Edition. Hardback. 4to., pp.xvi,70(26)illustrations & adverts.; photogravure frontispiece & 16 other full-page & vignette illustrations. Original blue buckram covers with impressively bold gilt floral decoration. Very good indeed bright clean copy. Top edge gilt.Small old ownership signature of one Mary Upton Presentation copy from the artist's older sister Mabel Beardsley on the verso of the front endpaper - "To Julia with love from Mabel Beardsley." Mabel Beardsley (1871 - 1916) was the heir to Aubrey's estate. She was a striking looking actress and friend of W B Yeats whose 'Upon a Dying Lady' is addressed to her. Frank Harris claimed in 1925 that she had an incestuous relation with her brother and conceived and aborted their child. He was something of a scandalmonger and this is unlikely to be true. A fascinating association item. Very good indeed.
