It is unusual to find complete sets inscribed in each volume to the same recipient. The volumes are inscribed, respectively, "Frederick R. Pelly from Winston S. Churchill Oct. 11. 1933"; "To F. R. Pelly from Winston S. Churchill Oct 21. 1934"; "To F. R. Pelly from Winston S. Churchill, October 1936"; "To F. R. Pelly from Winston S. Churchill, August 1938". Fred Pelly (1869-1940) had played international football for England in the 1890s. He was from a prominent family: his grandfather was governor of the Bank of England, his father was a naval captain, and his brother was an admiral who commanded HMS Tiger at Jutland.
