Original blue cloth boards with gilt borders and illustrations on the cover. Bumped and chipped extremities with fading of the colours. Rubbed gilt illustrations. 5 x 2 cm stain on the cover. Brown mark on the top edge of the book. Cloth is bumped and mild dents on the edges of the boards. The hinges are weak in places. Rear end page has come away from the hinge. Browned end papers. Ink signature of previous owner on the front paste down. Finger marks and some blue marks on some pages. Page 47 is split at the top edge. 1 cm tear on page 33. Fold on page 26. First state book with no "ix" on the contents page. The first state dust jacket with 7/6 on the spine is browned with rubbing and marks on the covers. Pieces missing from the spine edges and a centrally over the illustration. Tears on the folds and edges. Spine and folds are reinforced internally with tape.
