The magnificent First Edition, First Printing of the first book by one of America's most popular authors, Tom Clancy. With all first issue points on the book and the dustjacket. A highly successful book later made into an equally successful movie of the same name. Red cloth, very clean; interior of the book is clean and bright; with slight cocking, very minor. The ISBN number is on the back cover. The dustjacket is in fine condition but for one small tear on the bottom edge, minor, protected by an archival plastic cover. A beautiful copy and a true first for a classic's collector. This title was Tom Clancy's first novel and it caught the attention of readers due to its remarkable technical detail. Clancy's attention to detail extended to the technological aspects of submarines, including a fictional device called a "gradiometer" used by the Red October. This device allowed precise navigation by measuring variations in the local gravitational field. Interestingly, while no Soviet vessel actually carried such elaborate gear, the U.S. Navy had developed a similar system for covert navigation and passive detection of gravity field changes.
