Description

Complete set in original decorative cloth bindings, with illustrations by C E Brock and H M Brock and edited by R Brimley Johnson. The set is a mixed edition, being either the 3rd or the 4th edition with the exception of Pride and Prejudice Vol I which is a 1st in this form. The bindings have gilt titles to spine and front board. The top page edges are gilt; the remaining edges are uncut. All have decorative endpapers, half titles (with edition information to verso), colour frontispieces, decorative titles, illustration lists, and text with 5 further colour plates. Some have their original page markers. Sense and Sensibility Vol I: 3rd edn, frontispiece portrait of Jane Austen, list of Austen novels and Memoir, text 163 pp. Vol II: text 218 pp with 7 plates including frontispiece. Pride and Prejudice Vol I: 1898, armorial bookplate of Henley Evans, Clifton to front pastedown, preface, text 191pp. Vol II: 1901 4th ed, 210 pp. Mansfield Park Vol I: 3rd ed 1902, preface, 245pp. Vol II: 3rd ed 1902, 249pp. Emma Vol I: 3rd ed 1901, preface, 245pp. Vol II: 3rd ed 1901, 258 pp. Northanger Abbey: 3rd 1901, preface, 245 pp. Persuasion: 3rd 1901, preface 261pp. All the bindings bar P&P I have been professionally rebacked with repair to inner spine joints, and are sound and tight. The bindings are clean and some have slight fading - particularly to the spines. P&P II and MP II have some browning at the bottom edge of the back board. Emma I has a bump to the bottom corner of the back board. Some have light browning to endpapers and occasional some brown marking at the endpaper joints. The majority of tissue guards have been replaced. Contents are generally clean and sound with the occasional small mark or light spot. There are a few professional paper repairs.
