Roosevelt left the White House almost at once for the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African expedition to east and central Africa. This huge expedition killed or trapped over eleven thousand specimens, including over 1000 large animals. The trip was partly financed by Roosevelt's publishers who paid $50,000 for a series of articles which became the basis for this work. Roosevelt describes the excitement of the chase, the people he met, and the flora and fauna he collected in the name of science.
