The author's best-known novel, it also won the 1983 National Book Award, and was the basis for Steven Spielberg's 1985 film of the same name starring Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery all three of whom were nominated for Oscars and Danny Glover. Avidly and repeatedly read, copies are uncommon in this condition, which, outside of a few small, nearly invisible tears, is pristine. The Color Purple is a powerful novel about the struggle of African American women in the early 20th century. It follows the life of Celie, a young black girl born into poverty and segregation, who is sexually abused by her father and later winds up in an abusive marriage. Despite her struggles, Celie finds her voice and personal growth through letters and the support of other women.
