Three volumes, octavo (19 x 12 x 9cm), pp.[viii], 325; [viii], 374; [viii], 333pp. Bound without half-titles or adverts in period-style half brown calf over marbled sides, twin red and black labels, decorated in gilt. No ownership signatures or inscriptions, edges trimmed clean when bound, vintage dampmark running through volume one (lower half/edge) and volume two (top margin), volume three barely affected. Historic repair to marginal tear pp.3-4 vol II, exteriors are fine. Overall a good-very good set in attractive recent leather bindings. An entirely presentable and affordable copy of the first edition. Evans' first novel, published under her pseudonym George Eliot in 1859.
