At the time of publishing, the Quarto edition was issued at 1/11/6, while this pirated copy sold for just 4 shillings. The rise of pirated editions of important works such as this, indicates a wider distribution to the public, showing the inclinations of the newly emerging English common reader.Bound in quarter leather with paper-covered boards.'Don Juan' is Lord Byron's satirical epic poem, an important feat of Romantic poetry. Byron portrays Don Juan as a man easily seduced by women, rather than a womaniser. The character, but not the plot, is taken from the legendary Spanish libertine figure. Byron's poem is written in ottava rima across sixteen cantos. Upon the publication of the first cantos in 1819 the poem was criticized as immoral. With a library bookplate of the City of Nottingham Public Libraries, with the occasional library stamp.Endpapers renewed and original blanks retained. Lacking half title. Bound in quarter leather with paper-covered boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the leather, heavier to the head and tail of the spine. Fading to the boards. Endpapers have been renewed and blanks retained. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the occasional area of spotting. Library stamps to the odd page. Very Good Indeed.
