Description

Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1864. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 2nd Printing A very good copy of the 1864 first edition published by Ticknor & Fields, Boston. BAL states that "According to publisher's records, 1650 copies printed May 7, 1864. This is the 2nd printing of Aug. 12, 1864, normally identified as the Second Edition on the copyright page. This copy, however, does not state 2nd edition on the copyright page and shows no signs of being rubbed off, as many copies of the second printing have been seen with the edition statement scraped off in an attempt to pass as copies of the first printing. A further distinction between the 2 printings is the list of Thoreau's books on p. [ii]: it is priced in the 1st printing and unpriced in the 2nd. The book prices do not accompany the list of titles on p. [ii] in my copy. BAL has not seen a copy of the true 1st printing with this list not priced." BAL 20113. Condition: viii, 328 pp. (8vo) blind stamped…
