Early ownership name on the title page, as well as a small embossed library name "Library Herma Knoche." This is volume 1 only of the 2 volume set. The second edition (first edition was 1753) of Linnaeus monumental classification of plants. This was the first use of the 2-name (binomial) system of classification (still in use today), pioneered by Linnaeus. It is impossible to overstate the importance of Linnaeus and his classification systems on the development of modern biology. Early editions of Linnaeus' works are nearly unobtainable. Editions issued in his lifetime (1707-1788) are extremely scarce. This edition (2nd) of Species Plantarum is Linnaeus' list of every known plant at the time of publication. The first edition has 5,940 species. The second edition added to that. Please email with questions or to request photos.
