A huge ex-con named Moose Malloy hires a reluctant Marlowe to find Velma, his former girlfriend, leading to an underworld of blackmailing, gambling, and corrupt cops and politicians. The author's second book and basis for the 1944 film, Murder, My Sweet which was directed by Edward Dmytryk, and starred Dick Powell as Philip Marlowe. The film was remade in 1975 by Dick Richards and starred Robert Mitchum as Marlowe. Housed in a cloth clamshell case with a leather label on the spine and the titles stamped in gold gilt. A Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone mystery, and regarded by the author as his best novel.
